joining show team

Welcome to our Show Team! If your young rider is ready to test their skills at a dressage focused schooling show, Team Rosebud may be for you.  We focus on attending shows as a team, supporting and helping each other to accomplish our individual goals. Parent/guardian involvement is a huge contributor to our success!

To be elligible for Show Team (March - December), you must first get approval from Jules. Approval is based on current team size and maturity of rider.

Riders must do one of the following (at minimum). Riders with their own horse are not required to lease a horse.

  • Two weekly dressage lessons + 1-day/wk lease - $575/mo OR
  • One dressage lesson + One jump lesson + 1-day/wk lease - $625/mo

Riders are expected to pay $50/per horse per show for trailering (not required if you trailer your own horse).

Riders are expected to register themselves for each show, paying their entry feeds directly to the show office.

Riders are expected to prepare horses and equipment for the show.

Updates!

Congratulations to everyone who participated in our dressage show at 'home' on August 11th! Riders and horses alike were clearly more relaxed on home turf, and the scores were proof!  Special shout out to our volunteers, especially those who were not competing but showed up for everyone anyway. Thank you!

Our team continues to shine bright at these schooling shows, with excellent sportsmanship, volunteering, and improving their skills.

We are looking forward to the September 8th show with LWSC. There are limited slots left, to be sure to register! Remember, 8 hours of volunteer hours are your key to the end of year awards banquet for LWSC.

Thank you to our lead trainer, Jules, as well as parents, friends, riders, and students for volunteering and making these shows come to life. You are the reason these shows are possible!

All students must be enrolled in two lessons each week and have a one day lease on the horse they want to show if they do not own their show horse;

(This will diminish the horse show fee) If two students lease one horse, we will set up a show schedule.)

On show weekends your show day will count as lease ride;

  • show season March 2024-December 2024
  • trailer fee $50/per horse and show (Paid to Jules),
  • show fee entry, is payed directly to the show office by student at time of registration
  • students prepare horses and equipment for show

These rules don’t apply for horse shows at our ranch!!!

Afternoon BEFORE the Show Day

Prep a stall in the little barn (this step is not required for shows at RRR):

  • Clean a stall if dirty
  • Prep and spread extra shavings in a stall (shavings can be found next to the hay shed. Pour in 1-2 large buckets of water in the top and let it soak before spreading out 1 bag is usually enough).
  • Hay & fresh water bucket in stall
  • Prep/soak her dinner

Prep for horse:

  • Wash/rinse legs and feet, can bathe entire horse in warmer months if needed)
  • Full groom
  • Braid and bun mane
  • Put horse in the prepped stall with dinner & blanket if needed, hang halter/lead rope on stall door (not required for shows at RRR)

Tack Prep/loading:

*Jules does not check what you pack, so make sure you have everything you need

*Anything you are using of Jules’ goes in the horse trailer, anything that is yours you take with you

  • Clean saddle and load in trailer
  • Clean bridle and load in trailer
  • Girth
  • Saddle pad - recommend white dressage cut show pad. If you don't have one, you can use one of Jules’ gray monogrammed pads.
  • Whip
  • Brush box
  • Grain for at the show, feed pan/bucket, treats/carrots
  • Water bucket for your horse (recommend purchasing your own, they have these at ACE and the Grange as well as Amazon.)
  • Clean riding boots
  • Helmet
  • Riding Gloves
  • *Safety vests aren’t generally worn at shows, and it is a parent’s choice whether to wear one.

Extra Prep (not required for shows at RRR):

  • Cleaning and prepping stalls for other horses
  • Water buckets for other stalls
  • Loading muck supplies in trailer
  • Filling hay nets
  • Fill big bins with extra hay for the trailer ride home
  • Gathering extra water buckets to load in the trailer

Show Day

What to wear:

Recommended: white show shirt, black show jacket, and white breeches, but that is not required for most schooling shows. A solid color top and breeches can work.

*Riders need to stay clean for their tests. Most riders wear sweats or rain pants (or even snow pants depending on the weather) over show pants and a sweatshirt (a juliane Henry sweatshirt is always nice!) or long sleeve shirt over her show shirt (don’t rely on just a coat because running around they can get warm and want to take jackets off).

  • Wear mud boots or sneakers and bring riding boots so they stay clean

Hair:

Hair should be pulled back into a low bun  (or braids with bows on the ends for 10 and under). Most riders with buns cover with a snood or show net. (https://a.co/d/iTHHDnD )  NO PONYTAILS WHILE RIDING THE TEST.

What to Bring:

  • Hats, gloves, hand warmers, blankets, chairs - it’s a long day. If it’s not raining we will set up some chairs near the arenas to watch the riders. If it’s a rainy day bring extra clothes to change into after the test.
  • Snacks and drinks. A lot of the parents bring a snack to share. There are no food/drinks available to purchase at Bridle Trails or RRR.
  • If siblings are coming pack quiet activities

Arrival:

  • Arrival time will be based on the first ride time of the day. Preliminary ride times usually come out 2-3 days before the show and they are finalized on the day before the show. We’ve generally had someone in the first group around 9:00 so in the past arrival is at 8:00. That will be finalized with Jules on the evening before the show.
  • When the horses arrive everyone works together to get the horses in the stalls with hay and water
  • Completely unload the trailers and set up the tack. Everyone works together to get the job done, so it’s not necessarily about just getting your own stuff. For example a few riders will work together to get all the bridles on the correct stalls while others fill water buckets. The big kids do a great job of helping the little ones!
  • Once everything is set up the first riders will begin prepping for their tests

Show Information:

  • Once you have ride times make a plan on when to tack up and warm up. This varies for the invidual riders and horses, but is important to think about ahead of time to reduce stress.
  • Jules doesn’t call out the tests for the students at shows. Many of the other moms/parents will read tests if you are not comfortable reading for your child. Please make sure to ask early with the time you'd need help.
  • If your horse kicks other horses or people, put a red ribbon in her tail to indciate others need to give her space.
  • A lot of adults bring green horses to these shows too so it’s not necessarily the dependable school horses our students are used to. Remind your students to be cautious and respectful of others.
  • Generally our riders stay at the show until their horse is loaded in the trailer to go home, then stalls need to be cleaned and trailers loaded back up with all the stuff. If that isn’t feasible then you can always make arrangements if you need to leave earlier.
  • Once the horses are back at the barn they need to be unloaded, blanketed and put away, the trailer needs to be unloaded, and the stalls cleaned if they haven’t been already by someone who didn’t go to the show. If it’s a late day Jules will determine how much help she needs at the barn and not everyone needs to go back to help, and/or she’ll say the trailer can wait until the next day to be unloaded.
