What is IEA Dressage?

The Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) hosts dressage competitions across the United States. Rules are a different than our schooling shows.  Riders are not required to own their own horse or tack to participate. During shows riders are randomly assigned a horse to ride in an individual test, and then another horse to ride in an equitation class. Riders are judged on their skill, but not necessarily marked down when something goes wrong - instead the judge looks at how the rider handles the situation.

More info can be found here (we are Zone 6, Region 1): https://www.rideiea.org/dressage/

How does the team work at JHE?

Team participation is by invite only from Jules.

 Financial Commitment

  • $70 individual membership to IEA is required for each team member (You'll need to sign up before October 1st).
  • A one time practice fee of $140 will be collected in September to cover the 4 practice lessons (nonrefundable if your rider does not attend practice.
  • A team fee will also be charged, but depends on how many riders sign up. This covers the cost of the team/coach registrations and will be divided equally among the team members.
  • Each show will run around $90 for entries, trailering costs if the team is asked to provide horses on away shows, and your personal travel expenses. If your rider does not have show attire that will also be a cost.

Show Attire

IEA is quite strict on show attire.

Riders must wear:

  • dark show jacket,
  • a white show shirt with a standing collar or a stock tie,
  • tan or white breeches with tall boots or paddock boots with half chaps.
  • Jodhpurs with paddock boots are also accepted.
  • Hair can either be tucked inside the helmet with a hairnet or worn in a low bun with a snood (net cover).

Is this a fit for your rider?

How do you know if IEA is a good fit for your rider?

Riders must be comfortable riding any horse that is deemed fit for their level. Riders are given limited information about the horse beforehand, info might include whether the rider can use spurs and/or a whip. Riders get very limited time on the horse before their test begins - a matter of minutes. Horses are tacked up for the day and warmed up by the host barn and riders will use the tack provided, there is not an option to switch to different tack. It truly is "luck of the draw" horse wise and it can be disappointing to draw an old horse that plods along while a team mate draws a school master. So... a good attitude is important.

Tests are categorized by level, and since the horses are unfamiliar, riders will generally start out riding a lower level then they may have been showing in regular dressage shows. Jules will determine the test level for each rider. Once a rider moves up a level they cannot go back down. Tests need to be memorized, but they seem to be easier/shorter than the dressage tests the students are used to showing.
